Tapestry Trust’s Spring Giving

We’re happy to announce the recipients of our Tapestry Trust donations for spring 2025. They are: Smart Works, German Shepherd Rescue Elite, The National Deaf Children’s Society and Pride in Surrey.

Smart Works was launched in 2013 to help empower unemployed women with the clothes, coaching and confidence they need to succeed at their job interview and transform their lives. They exist to help women break the cycle of hardship that results from being unemployed. Becca Munns’ Mum volunteers for Smart Works, she has seen first-hand how beneficial the charity is for women getting back into the workplace.

Around 40% of the charity helps had been unemployed for over a year, and 12% had applied for over 100 jobs before contacting Smart Works. They say: ‘The need has never been greater. The legacy of the pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis has had a disproportionate impact on the women we exist to support.’

Woof, here’s another great charity, suggested by Dan Webb, German Shepherd Rescue Elite – Rescue A German Shepherd.

The charity was established to help unwanted, abandoned and neglected German Shepherds and to offer education to the general public on the responsibilities and pros and cons of owning a large working breed dog. They say: ‘Our aim is to offer help and advice so in the future we become the prevention rather the cure.’ GSRE is a nationwide charity and Dan’s Uncle Lee volunteers at the Essex branch.

The National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) was suggested by Sarah Phillis, in part because they go all out to raise funds and are a hugely deserving charity, the leading charity for deaf children. They say: ‘We’re here for every deaf child who needs us – no matter what their level or type of deafness or how they communicate.’ They are currently fundraising to hit their education appeal target, as well as money for daily family support.

Stewart Thomson spearheads Tapestry’s relationship with Pride in Surrey, who are celebrating their Sixth year: PiS has a mission to celebrate, educate and connect the LGBTQ+ community and allies across Surrey and the surrounding counties. They continue to grow and now have a regular site to hold their festival, in Stoke Park, Guildford, with this year’s Pride in Surrey festival taking place on 6th September.

The festival (and their year-round Pride Hub in Egham) have proven particularly effective for younger and trans individuals, who often experience the most difficulties in finding communities in which to be welcomed and accepted for who they are – something that has sadly become more challenging in recent years.  This donation will continue to deliver their invaluable support.

The Tapestry Trust was set up in 2024, donating to charities nominated and voted for by the Tapestry Team, each quarter. Each of the charities resonate in some way with members of our team, adding a personal touch to the Trust. We look forward to revealing our summer nominations.
