Internal Inspiration

We recently welcomed Helen Oguntoyinbo and Nana Afriyie to the Tapestry team for a six-week summer internship, as part of the 10,000 Black Interns programme.

Our Senior Research Exec, Dan Webb, sat down with them both during their final week to hear how they found their experience. Read on!

What did you expect market research would be like before starting your Summer Internship?

“Before my internship at Tapestry, I imagined a role primarily focused on data analysis and report writing, as I only had academic experience in research. While these elements were certainly present, the reality exceeded my expectations in terms of the meticulous market research process. Tasks such as questionnaire logic checks, link checks, data cleaning, report templating, and charting helped me appreciate the entire research process.” Helen

Before joining Tapestry, I had some theoretical knowledge about research that was yet to be applied in a market environment. Now, as I reflect on my final week here, I can confidently say that I have gained invaluable practical experience.” Nana

What sort of work did you do during your internship?

My projects spanned diverse industries, from beauty and streaming to fitness and transport shelters. I also got to work on a qualitative research project, which has contributed to building a well-rounded research skillset. Tapestry’s commitment to my growth as an intern was evident through training sessions in questionnaire design and software like Q and Decipher. Helen

“Tapestry didn’t just offer a glimpse into the intricacies of market research, they fully immersed me into the life of a market researcher. Data cleans, data checks, and link checks taught me the importance of attention to detail and the steps necessary to produce reliable results critical to research. The briefings before each task helped me feel prepared, and the welcoming atmosphere encouraged me to ask questions freely. Tapestry also offered many growth opportunities such as questionnaire training, introductions to qualitative studies, and training on essential software like Q.” Nana

What was your favourite part of your Summer Internship?

“One of the most fulfilling tasks of my internship was templating a report. I learned that it was beyond just churning out what the numbers and percentages said but creating a story while giving actionable insights. It also helped me understand how different customer segments view brands. It was a task I loved and one that I think has really brushed up my analytical skills, especially uncovering the sometimes-overlooked insights.” Helen

“One of my favourite tasks was creating a report template. Designing potential cross-analyses based on demographics like ethnicity and age was fascinating. It uncovered important differences between various groups and revealed how businesses impact them in different ways. I also enjoyed storyboarding, where we highlighted key trends and uncovered hidden patterns, making complex data beautifully simple!” Nana

Nice! Anything else…?

Tapestry also provided opportunities to connect with the wider industry. I attended the MRG July content session, which was particularly enlightening, as it provided insights into industry challenges, audience attention, and broader societal trends in the UK.Helen

Being involved in qualitative studies was especially interesting. I had the privilege of being able to observe interviews and watch the research unfold. This gave me an insight into the benefits and possible limitations of using qualitative research techniques. Nana

Any final thoughts?

“Beyond the core research tasks, Tapestry created a friendly and helpful workplace. I even had a mentor before I started my internship. Learning from experienced researchers, asking endless questions, and sharing my thoughts helped me grow. The team was really welcoming, which made me feel genuinely valued.

This internship has been more than just a job; it was a launchpad to setting my career in motion. I have significantly improved my practical skills and industry knowledge, and I am excited to apply these as I embark on the next chapter of my career. Helen

“I am excited to use what I have learned from these interviews to help formulate a compelling story that gives the client a thorough understanding of their audience!

Overall, I must express my gratitude for the incredible kindness and support shown during my time at Tapestry, and that has made all the difference in my internship experience. The friendly atmosphere has made this journey not only productive but also genuinely enjoyable. I am excited to apply everything I have learned as I move forward in my career! Nana
